Why Accountability Works

Private commitments are negotiable; that is their entire problem. Say the same commitment out loud to people whose respect you want, and skipping it acquires a cost your own willpower never carried.

That is the whole mechanism of an accountability group: specific commitments, stated publicly, checked on a cadence, in front of peers who remember. Nothing mystical. Extremely effective.

Why Most of Them Are Theater

Accountability collapses when the group costs nothing to disappoint: anonymous internet circles, rotating drop-in crowds, rooms too large to notice you. If nobody would register your absence, nobody registers your progress either.

It also collapses without specificity. Work on marketing is not a commitment; ship the pricing page by the next dinner is. The group is only as strong as the sentences said in it.
