Your Personal
Board of Directors

The company has a board. Who is on yours?

The Idea, Plainly

A personal board of directors is a hand-picked set of people — usually four to six — who know you well enough to tell you the truth and have no reason to soften it. Not mentors on a pedestal. Working peers with standing invitations to call you wrong.

Nobody appoints it and there are no meetings. It exists the moment you know exactly who you would call before a decision that scares you — and they answer.

The Seats Worth Filling

A peer carrying comparable weight, who knows the loneliness of the job from inside. Someone a few years ahead of you, who has already paid for the lesson you are about to buy. A domain specialist for the thing you are worst at. And someone who knew you before any of this — the calibration seat.

What disqualifies someone: needing anything from you. Vendors, employees, and investors can be brilliant advisors and can never be board members. The seat requires nothing at stake but the relationship.

How You Actually Earn One

Boards are not recruited; they accrete. Small asks, honored confidences, favors done first, and repeated contact in small rooms over years. You cannot cold-email your way to someone who will take a 2 a.m. call.

Which is the real function of a standing table: it is where board seats get found. Six people, monthly, honestly — after a year of that, you have a bench. Request a seat.

Questions

What is a personal board of directors?
A small, informal set of people who tell you the truth about your work and your decisions — peers, people ahead of you, specialists, and someone who keeps you calibrated.
How is it different from having a mentor?
A mentor is one perspective, usually senior, usually occasional. A board is several perspectives with different angles on you — and peers are the seats that matter most.
How many people should be on it?
Four to six. Fewer and you have a friendship; more and you have an audience. It is the same arithmetic that sets the Outwork table at six.
Where do I find these people?
In small rooms, repeatedly, over time — not at mixers. A standing dinner of six is the most reliable board-recruitment machine we know of.

Start at the Table
